INFLUENSTER REVIEW: L’OREAL ROOT COVER UP

Just a few short months ago, you may remember a post I wrote, introducing Influenster and sharing some wonderful new skincare products from L’Oreal I had received to review. If you’ve never heard of Influenster before, I’ll give you the quick rundown – the site is all about reviewing products that you love in a fun and social way, while earning quirky badges and building your social impact score. As a “reward” for engaging, they send out themed VoxBoxes of products for you to enjoy, and ultimately review. When I received my first box, I figured that would be it for a while. Boy was I wrong! I’ve since received my second box containing an awesome new hair care product I’m excited to share with you: L’Oreal’s Root Cover Up.

This conveniently sized spray can of awesomeness promises flawless roots in just 3 seconds, with its smudge-free, ammonia-free formula – and it totally delivered! Available in six shades, my Dark Brown spray helped to cover up areas on my scalp where the hair was thinner and lighter (I dye my hair darker that its natural colour) and tends to be noticeably different. It turned a problem area into something I no longer have to worry about! Application is as easy as using hair spray, and the colour stayed put all day. My only word of advice – be sure to cover up areas of skin that you think may be in the line of fire. I tested the colour on my hand first (see the results in the video below, and it stained my skin for about a day. Otherwise, I’m thrilled to add this product to my lineup of daily hair care products.  I’d love to know what kind of results you’ve had when using Root Cover Up, so if you’ve given it a try, let me know in the comments!

FROM THE KITCHEN: SIMON & MARTINA’S DAK GALBI

rockford20peachy20simon20and20martina20dakgalbi205_zpsq0szfhcl

The internet is fabulous for many things, and although online shopping is usually at the top of my list of reasons why, it’s also a great resource for learning about (almost) anything. With the recent creation of my YouTube channel, I’ve discovered some fascinating fellow YouTubers who are sharing some fun glimpses into their lives. One couple in particular (that go by the handle Simon And Martina) has won me over with their charm and humour as they explore life in South Korea. From local restaurants, to product reviews, and Korean how-to videos, they offer you a chance to learn about a new country from the comfort of your home.

I have particularly enjoyed watching Martina’s cooking videos, and since I won’t be traveling to South Korea in the near future, I thought I would temporarily transport myself to East Asia and try this tasty looking dish. Here’s what you’ll need to make it, too:

Marinade Ingredients:

  • 1 cube of curry bouillon (make sure it is either Korean or Japanese curry)
  • 1 tbsp of minced ginger
  • 7 gloves of minced garlic
  • 1-2 tbsp of Korean red pepper flakes (adjust for your heat preference)
  • 1 tbsp of Gochujang
  • 2 tbsp of mirin
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Other Ingredients:

  • 2-3 chicken breasts, cubed
  • 1 sweet potato, peeled and sliced
  • 2 bunches of green onions, chopped
  • 2 cups of cabbage, chopped roughly
  • 4-5 perilla leaves, chopped
  • 1 cup dduk (aka Korean Rice Cakes)
  • 1 bunch of enoki mushrooms
  • 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, place curry bouillon and add 1/2 cup of hot water. Allow to dissolve.
  2. Once dissolved, add all of the remaining ingredients for the marinade. Mix well.
  3. Add chicken to the marinade and set aside.
  4. Add a splash of olive oil to a large frying pan and place over medium heat.
  5. Add sweet potatoes and half of your cabbage to the pan. Cover with lid. Steam for about 5 minutes.
  6. Add chicken, marinade mixture, green onions, and remaining cabbage to pan. Cover with lid and let simmer on medium for 5 minutes.
  7. While  the chicken is simmering, add dduk to small bowl and cover with warm water.
  8. Once 5 minutes has passed, drain the dduk from the water and add to pan.
  9. Add enoki mushrooms, perilla leaves, and cheese on top. Cover and simmer for 5 additional minutes.
  10. Once chicken is cooked, plate and sprinkle sesame seeds on top.

This dish was full of flavour and absolutely delicious! I ate mine with a side of steamed rice, however, you can also add a spoonful of Dak Galbi onto a piece of lettuce or a perilla leaf and enjoy each perfectly wrapped bite.

NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick in Pink Lust
When I saw this beautiful, pink tube of lip colour in my bag, I nearly had an out-of-body moment. I have been wanting to try NYX’s Suede Cream Lipsticks for a while now, and was thrilled to finally be able to try it. Although the word ‘suede’ made me think this colour would be matte, it was actually quite shiny and glossy. The colour did transfer easily, but left behind a delightful pink stain once most of it rubbed off over the course of the day. I can’t wait to try this lipstick in a different (possibly lighter) shade.

Me Me Me Cosmetics Loose Powder Brush

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – I LOVE when I get a makeup brush in my Ipsy bag. They have always been great quality brushes, and I always feel like I am getting my money’s worth with a brush. This loose powder brush by Me Me Me is soft as a feather and glides over my skin so smoothly. It works perfectly with my matte finishing powder and leaves me with even looking skin.

Marc Anthony 3 Day Smooth
I was weary of this product at first, as I prefer smoothing products that you can spray on to your hair rather than having to massage it in with your hands. I find many smoothing products to be very slippery and leave my hands feeling very greasy, but this product was a pleasant surprise. It had a light, floral scent, and did not leave any unwanted residue on my hands. I didn’t notice much difference in the smoothness of my hair, but the real test will come once we start getting more humid and rainy weather.

Pixi by Petra Beauty Blush Duo in Rose Gold
Although Ipsy notes that this product is meant to be layered, I’ve been using it as a blush (the darker shade) and a highlighting powder (the lighter shade) and love it even more than its original function. I’ve also read in the reviews that some people are using the lighter shade as an eyeshadow, and guess what? It looks great on my eyes, too! It just goes to show that with a little experimentation, you can make any product your own and create some fun, new looks!

Vera Mona Lotus Eyeshadow in Clover
This soft, peach eyeshadow was a welcomed pop of colour to the eyeshadows I usually receive in my Ipsy bags. It pairs perfectly with my brown and neutral eyeshadows to give my eyes an extra pop of colour and shimmer.
